While band scanning last Sunday (September 8, 2014) I stumbled upon the Cuban numbers station HM01 on 11,530 kHz at 17:30 UTC.

It’s always intriguing to hear shortwave numbers stations, but I prefer those that stick to pure vocal number strings; HM01 has numbers with digital bursts between number sets, which is a more fatiguing listening experience.  Nonetheless, I kept it playing in the background as I tooled around the radio room Sunday afternoon, putting away supplies from my recent three week road trip.

Cuba’s communist-led intelligence services are aggressively recruiting leftist American academics and university professors as spies and influence agents, according to an internal FBI report published this week.

Cuban intelligence services “have perfected the work of placing agents, that includes aggressively targeting U.S. universities under the assumption that a percentage of students will eventually move on to positions within the U.S. government that can provide access to information of use to the [Cuban intelligence service],” the five-page unclassified FBI report says. It notes that the Cubans “devote a significant amount of resources to targeting and exploiting U.S. academia.”

“Academia has been and remains a key target of foreign intelligence services, including the [Cuban intelligence service],” the report concludes.

El 31de enero de 1989 la Dirección General de Inteligencia informó a una delegación del espionaje de la Stasi,  que visitaba Cuba, sobre la deserción del oficial  cubano estacionado en Ecuador(Enrique García ).

El servicio de inteligencia cubano estaba preocupado por la reacción de EE.UU, ya que todavía no habían hecho ninguna declaración sobre el caso o si preparaban alguna medida política contra Cuba. 

La DGI valoró  que la deserción  podría  provocar " serios problemas al trabajo de los agentes cubanos" en América Latina,analizó las posibles causas de la" traición" y que el padre de Diaz "es el jefe de la Oficina de Prensa Latina en Quito.....".

El turismo germano- oriental hacia Cuba se encontraba bajo el control de la Stasi

El aumento del turismo de la República Democrática Alemana hacia Cuba preocupaba a la Stasi.

Para el año 1980 viajarían a Cuba 17 grupos con unos 680 turistas germano-orientales. Para evitar deserciones en los aeropuertos canadienses y para asegurar las labores operativas,de acuerdo a documentos desclasificados, el segundo guía del grupo era un oficial de la Stasi. En el grupo viajaban a la vez varios informantes.

El Salvador’s purportedly moderate new president met this week with two Cuban spies convicted in the United States, raising questions about his willingness to work with U.S. officials on anti-gang and anti-drug efforts.

Salvador Sanchez Ceren met with the spies as well as Cuban President Raul Castro on the communist island, according to a Salvadoran news outlet. The two men, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez (no relation), were members of the “Cuban Five” that were convicted on charges of conspiracy and espionage in the United States and later released to Cuba.
